SILVER SPRINGS SHORES — A 27-year-old Silver Springs Shores man riding a 2007 motorcycle was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday in Silver Springs Shores, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The dead man was identified as Jonathan W. Monteiro, of Silver Springs Shores. His death is the 52nd traffic fatality of the year in Marion County, and the first for the month of July. Last year’s death total was 69, and the year before was 70.

According to Adam Nagle, a friend of Monteiro’s, the fatal crash occurred about a half-mile from Monteiro’s home. Nagle said Monteiro had invited him to a July Fourth celebration at his home, but Nagle got lost. He said Monteiro was on his way to a convenience store where Nagle called him from to show him the way to his home when the crash occurred.

“I should have just asked for directions,” Nagle said at the scene. “He was a good friend, a great guy.”

Two people who were riding in a car that was involved in the collision were injured, the FHP said.

The driver of the car, identified by troopers as 75-year-old Virginia Scully, a Silver Springs Shores resident, was flown to Shands at the University of Florida in critical condition.

The passenger, Vernon Scully, 79, was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center. His condition was not known. The relationship between the Scullys was not clear Friday.

According to troopers, the 2005 Mercury was southbound on Pine Road and attempting to make a left turn onto Hemlock Circle Way. The motorcycle, a 2007 Suzuki, was also traveling south on Pine.

Troopers said Monteiro attempted to pass the vehicle on the double yellow line and apparently didn’t notice that car’s driver was attempting to turn. The motorcycle struck the Mercury on the driver’s side.

After impact, the car veered off the roadway and into a nearby yard, where it hit some lawn furniture before stopping. Monteiro was ejected from the motorcycle and landed in the yard.

A helmet was strapped on the motorcycle, but officials don’t know whether Monteiro was wearing a helmet.

Pretty sad. Unusual for it to be the bikers fault. Not wearing a helmet and passing in a no passing zone is certainly not a good thing.

Yes, this a sad thing to happen to someone. Lots of people do not remember that most roads in residential areas are 25 mph. Passing on the double line is not legal either, but I see it often done here in Marion County. My sincere condolescences to the families.

it is sad that this happened and I am sorry that they guy died but this is all the more reason why you don't pass on a solid double yellow line! A Mercury is not a small car so how can this guy not notice that they were making a left turn? Apparently to him they were going too slow. Like THE SPEED LIMIT (30MPH)!

Wow, it sounds like Mrs. Scully, the driver of the Mercury, has also died?

My prayers go out your family, patriotsw21.

What FHP failed to say...The driver of the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed. In a very short distance he screamed through six gears and passed four other cars on a double yellow line. It wasn't the first time he has coming speeding up our road.

I helped hold Ms. Scully's head still while waiting for medics to arrive, while Mr. Scully pleaded for someone to please help his wife. It is an image I will never get out of my head.

    My prayes are with all.

    ponygirlgt1,

For FHP to report this accurately, it helps to have the cooperation of "all" the witnesses. If your not going to contact me, then please don't mislead the people or family members who read these forums. I've left my phone number and email in the other post.
