SALT SPRINGS – Marion County sheriff’s deputies initially wanted to take a deaf Citra man to The Centers after they found him banging his head on his truck outside a gas station in Salt Springs.
But deputies say Stewart Calvin Brodbent, 37, spit on them and tried to kick out the windows in a patrol car, leading them to take Brodbent to jail.
At about 8 a.m. Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from workers at the Salt Springs Grocery that Brodbent was allegedly banging on the glass of the store. Deputies caught up with Brodbent at the Qwik King on East County Road 316, and learned that Brodbent was deaf and unable to speak, according to the Sheriff’s Office report.
Once Brodbent was in the patrol car, he continuously punched the back of the front seat and kicked the side windows, the report states. When Deputy Joshua Gnesin pulled Brodbent out of the car, Brodbent allegedly spit on him four times.
Brodbent was taken to the Marion County Jail and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.

Yes let's beat him up... But first let's assess the situation.. banging his head? Yelling and screaming? Objects to being arrested? Can't communicate? Hands cuffed behind him. Spits. Could have been worse, he could have bled on the deputy if YOU had been in charge. Do we know what caused the disabled person to become frustrated enough to bang his head? Naw, screw him, make him bleed.
